2009 Australian Schools Cup

December 21, 2009

Austral would like to send out a big congratulations to all of the athletes, coaches and officials that participated at this year’s Australian Schools Volleyball Cup in Melbourne earlier this month.

Austral had many of its younger members participating in the event for both Unley High School and Mercedes College.  The athletes and coaches all represented their schools, Austral and themselves in an exemplary fashion and played some great volleyball too.

A special mention must go to the Unley High School Open Boys side who won the gold medal in the Division 1 competition under the guidance of Austral’s own volleyball tragic Peter Bawhey.

New Coaches Appointed

December 21, 2009

The committee sought applications for the two senior coaching roles and we are proud to announce the appointment of Michael Murphy as the Senior Women’s Coach and Simon Phillips as the Senior Men’s Coach for 2010.

Both Michael and Simon bring a great deal of energy and enthusiasm coupled with recent years of experience coaching at both State League and National Junior level.

We are confident with Michael and Simon at the helm that the future is bright for both our men’s and women’s program.

Stay tuned for more updates from Michael and Simon in future publications.

Farewell to Pottsy

December 21, 2009

It is with much sadness that I advise Jason Potts has decided to leave Austral after 3 years with the club as a coach.  A former player for the club, Jason returned to Austral in 2007 to coach the Reserve Men before taking up the position as the Head Coach of the League Women for season’s 2008 & 2009 – being voted as State League’s Best Women’s Coach in both of those years.

Jason’s experience has seen the League Women develop into a strong team and we all hope to see his work continue to be developed in the coming seasons.

We wish Jason and his family all the best for the future and hope to see them back at the club sometime soon.
