The Austral Spikezone competition is for primary school aged children, competing in Year 4-5 and Year 6-7 teams of four players. The courts and nets fit a badminton sized court, and a special softer ball is used to encourage players to develop the basic volleyball skills in a more accessible way. It is run on Friday afternoons after school at Westbourne Park Community Gym, and is supported currently by Forbes, Westbourne Park, Goodwood, Edwardstown and St Therese schools.
This year has seen a number of Juniors recruited into the club, from 10 to 12 years old, which gives us a lot of depth in future talent for the VSA under 15 competitions.
The finals day for term 4 this year saw some exciting games with plenty of support from parents and friends, and special appearances from two of our club’s Australian Volleyball League (Adelaide Storm) Women representatives. Thanks to our Junior Development Manager Anne-Marie for running and developing the Spikezone comp, Sue Durdin for heavily promoting the club, and to Anisa and Micky for their assistance on the day and providing positive role models for aspiring future athletes.
Congratulations to all the winning teams, and to all the schools and coaches for encouraging their young people in our great sport.
